INGREDIENTS METHOD
2 cups self raising flour 1 Chop dates and walnuts
1 cup caster sugar 2 Place in saucepan
1 cup boiling water 3 Add boiling water and bicarbonate of soda
2 oz margarine 4 Simmer gently
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 5 Add sugar and butter while still warm
1 tsp baking powder 6 Cool
4 oz dates 7 Add egg, flour and baking powder
2 oz walnuts 8 Add vanilla essence
1 egg 9 Grease and line a loaf tin
1 tsp vanilla essence 10 Bake for 1 hour at 350F; 180C; Gas Mk 4
